FAQ Overview
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the Wijit. If you are unable to find the answer to your question please feel free to contact us.
Wijit Models
What is the Wijit?
The Wijit is a revolutionary driving and braking system for manual wheelchairs. It uses precision geared levers that amplify the user's pushing power, while reducing strain on the user's shoulders and upper body. Using the Wijit promotes cardiovascular health and is easier and safer to operate.
With the Wijit, even marginal (and child) users can now safely and independently propel, stop and steer their wheelchairs from a comfortable, stable, and upright position.
What is the New Wijit Plus?
The new model incorporates a push-button quick-release and range of motion adjustment for the lever arm.
Wijit for Kids and Teens?
Is there a Wijit for Kids and Teens?
Yes. The Wijit Voyager is the first healthy, safe way for children to propel themselves in a manual wheelchair. The Voyager utilizes a Wijit system mounted on a 20 inch wheel, designed for children between the ages of 7 to 14 years old (generally, children 14 years and older can use our standard model). Please see Kids & Teens section for more information.
Wheelchair Compatibility and Installation
Is the Wijit compatible with my Wheelchair?
The Wijit and Wijit Voyager are currently compatible with many of the popular quick-release manual wheelchairs being used today. To check if your wheelchair is already compatible with the Wijit, please see our Wijit Wheelchair Compatibility section.
How difficult is it to install the Wijit?
Although SuperQuad recommends the Wijit be installed by a wheelchair dealer, the Wijit's relatively simple installation process has been achieved by many of our users. The Wijit comes with an illustrated step by step Installation Manual.

Reimbursement: Medicare and Private Insurances
What insurance companies have reimbursed for the Wijit?
The Wijit has been reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid, Workers' Compensation and other state agencies and private insurance companies. The Wijit should be billed to Medicare under HCPCS code E2227. For questions regarding claim coverage or reimbursement, please contact your insurance representative.
Added Width and Weight
Does the Wijit make my wheelchair wider and heavier?
The Wijit adds approximately 1.5 inches per side to the overall width of a typical wheelchair. The Wijit adds approximately 5.5 pounds per side to the weight of a wheelchair wheel, which is easily compensated for by its added pushing power and gearing.
Increased Pushing Power
How much pushing power does the Wijit add?
The Wijit has been measured to amplify a user's pushing power to the wheelchair's wheels by an amazing 45%!
Braking and Steering
How do the Wijit's disc brakes work?
The Wijit has built-in disc brakes (located in the Wijit's hub) that are applied by pulling inward on the Wijit's lever arm - eliminating the need for the user's hands to act as brakes. For more information on applying the Wijit's brakes, please see our How Does it Work? section.
How do you steer a wheelchair using the Wijit?
The Wijit allows its users to use a combination of braking and lever control to steer the wheelchair, all while the user's hands stay safely on the Wijit's lever arms. For more information on steering the Wijit, please see our How Does it Work? section.
Shifting Driver Modes - Forward, Reverse, and Neutral
How do you shift?
The Wijit includes a Drive Mode Shifter located at the top of each of Wijit's lever arm. The shifter allows the user to shift between forward, neutral and reverse. For more information on maneuvering and shifting the Wijit, please see our How Does it Work? section.
Quick-Release System
What is the quick-release system and how does it work?
The Wijit includes a pinned quick-release system that allows the wheel to be removed. The user pulls a pin located on the axle and this allows the Wijit and wheel to be removed.
The Wijit Plus includes a quick-release push-button conveniently located on the outside of the Wijit hub for even easier wheel removal. The user simply pushes the button to remove the Wijit and wheel.
Stowing Driver Levers Back
Can the Wijit's lever arms be moved out of the way for daily activities and transfers?
Yes. The Wijit's lever arms can be pivoted back into a "stowed position" where they are conveniently out of the way for daily activities. For more information on stowing the Wijit's lever arms, please see our How Does it Work? section.
Arm Rests
Does the Wijit work with arm rests?
Yes. Most wheelchair arm rests do not interfere with the operation of the Wijit.
Folding Chairs
Is the Wijit compatible with folding wheelchairs?
The Wijit is compatible with most folding wheelchairs that have a quick-release system for the wheels. To check if your wheelchair is already compatible with the Wijit, please see our Wijit Wheelchair Compatibility section.
Original Wheels
Can I use my original wheels interchangeably with the Wijit wheels?
Yes. The Wijit's quick-release system allows easy interchange with the original wheelchair wheels.

Differences between Wijit® and the 2-Gear Drive
What is the difference between Wijit® and the 2-gear drive?
In the Wijit lever drive system for wheelchairs, you propel the wheelchair by pushing on the levers in place of the handrims. This lever drive system is a one-speed drive which gives you a slightly greater than 1:1 drive speed when you push on the ends of the levers. You may shift between forward, neutral, and reverse, using a knob on the end of the lever, but there are not multiple speeds. The levers may be stored in a rearward position when necessary. Wijit does not have a built-in hill-holder with override as a part of its system.
Magic Wheels 2-wheel drive is more similar to conventional wheelchair wheels, in that you control the wheelchair with the handrims. The 2-wheel drive has a built-in mechanical gear system in the wheels' hub, much like that of a bicycle. You use this system only when you choose, by shifting into low gear. Because of the geared hub, the 2-gear wheels have 2 speeds, 1:1 and 2:1, and a built-in hill-holder in 2:1 speed.
Shifter Paddle Options
What if I can't shift with the standard Wijit Shifter Knob?
Designed for Wijit users with diminished hand function, shifter paddles enable the user to switch driver modes without requiring grip by pushing on the paddle using their hand or forearm. For some users, it is easier to use the hand or forearm from one side of the body to shift drive modes in the opposite side. The shifter paddles are installed by SuperQuad or an authorized dealer and come in lengths of 1" or 2".
